Always in service

“Was $499.99, now $159.99” read the tag on the air fryer. Midas had always wanted to replace her well-used manual air fryer with a digital version but was not willing to pay the price. “It was too expensive”, she thought. She had just stumbled on this sale and was determined to purchase it.

But how will she get it home? She had left her car and walked to the store just a few metres away from home, so she could finish the audio book she had been listening to. She picked up the air fryer box and walked a few steps back and forth. “Well, it’s not that heavy and I will only have an extra bag to carry”, she muttered to herself. So she bought it along with other household items.

She had just walked a few distance when a bus stopped beside her. She casually looked up to see “not in service” displayed on the destination sign above the bus front window. The driver was also opening the front door and motioning with his hands for her to get on the bus. “But you’re not in service”, she protested. “I’ll be handing over to the next driver at the end of the street”, the driver replied. “That’s very nice of you, thank you!”, Midas said as she got on board. “God knows I needed this!” she thought and smiled to herself.

As believers, we are encouraged not to …forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased (Hebrews 13:16).  1 Timothy 6:18 reads let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share.

Sometimes we don’t seem to find the strength and eagerness to do good especially if it means we might go out of our way. Or don’t have enough to share, or just having that “not-in-service” feeling?

But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good (2 Thessalonians 3:13).

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart (Galatians 6:9).

How can you be in service today? Go on, lend a helping hand. Pray for someone today, open a door, share a meal, give up a seat on the bus, send a word of encouragement, visit a sick person, donate to a good cause, or just say thanks to a friend for being there for you. The list is endless.
