  3. More than memorising the Scriptures

Sammy is just 3 years old but can retell the stories in most of his favourite movies. He engages this storytelling skill when role-playing with his older brother, Andy, who is 6 years old.

When his mother, Leila, reads Sammy’s favourite storybook to him, he reads along to his mother’s amazement.

“You’re such a smart boy!”, Leila would say to him with hugs and kisses.

Yes, Sammy is very smart. He is employing his ability to memorize words and short stories. This is how most children develop their vocabulary and increase their capacity to understand and interact with others.

As Christian parents, teachers, and guardians, we can tap into this God-given ability for kids as young as Sammy to help them memorize parts of the Scripture. They can memorize their social stories, picture-word books and other literature for kids, without even intentionally asking them to. Through constant interaction with the books, they get to know the contents by heart.

We cannot underestimate our kids’ participation in spiritual exercises such as prayers, reading and memorising the Scriptures.

What are the benefits of memorizing the Scriptures?

Some of the benefits we can expect from helping kids memorize the Scriptures, include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Early learning of the Scripture: A lot of people give credit to how early their parents or grandparents taught them the Scriptures and attribute that early exposure for their relationship with God in later years of their lives. Paul had the same testimony about Timothy when he spoke of the faith of his mother, Eunice and grandmother, Lois. When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also (2 Timothy 1:5). A sound and consistent teaching of God’s word to our kids – through any means, including memorizing Scriptures – is the best, lasting legacy we can leave to our kids.
  1. Normalising God-focused conversations: Sometimes, we might wonder how we can start having conversations about God with our kids. These conversations can appear difficult, especially as the world around us does not place any importance on it and are trying to shut down public conversations about God. We can take up the challenge to teach our kids to memorise the Scriptures and we never know we might just be opening up more opportunities for conversations than we think. As we talk more about these verses at home, or church, in the car, etc., and make it an important daily or weekly activity, it becomes normal to talk about God – for us and our kids. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
  1. Subtle introduction of Christian values, doctrines, and principles: How much can our kids actually understand from the bible? Well, we don’t have to wait until they understand the virtues of patience, forgiveness, or faith; or the topics of redemption, evangelism, sanctification, faithfulness in marriage, etc. before telling them about it. We can use easy Scripture verses to tell stories about these virtues. They need to understand the basic truths of God’s attribute and wonders – His love, care, provision, faithfulness, His supremacy as the Creator, etc; a sense of what is wrong and right according to scriptural values; how we are to relate to God as His children etc.  These issues will become clear to them as we speak to their inner mind, their spirit man where God writes His words on their hearts. He has promised to write His words on their hearts, but we need to start the process by teaching them, so they can hear and understand. Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way (1 Samuel 12:23).
  1. Preparing their hearts for understanding deeper spiritual concepts: When we teach our kids to memorize Scriptures, we plant the seeds of God’s words in their hearts. They can also be referred to as the sincere milk of God’s word – the milk babies take so they can grow. As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby (1 Peter 2:2). This will prepare them to grow deeper in their knowledge of God’s word (Hebrews 5:12-14).
  1. Providing a warm and special time with parents, teachers, and guardians: This is particularly important as our kids get to spend special times with us learning of God, His words, and His ways. They learn to treasure and even look forward to this time if we can make them “see” and “understand” the importance of the word of God. Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD (Psalms 34:11).

More than memorising the Scriptures

More than memorising the Scriptures, we need to constantly water the seeds of God’s word that we have planted in the hearts of our kids through prayers. Through prayers, we invite and ask the Holy Spirit to interpret the words in their hearts, so they can understand beyond the words we use. Memorising the Scriptures is a spiritual exercise and requires spiritual instruments to be effective and fruitful.

More than memorising the Scriptures, our kids will understand God’s words better when we, the parents, teachers, guardians, etc., live out the words of God in our day-to-day life and interaction with the kids. They get a sense of how faithful and loving our God is, and how trustworthy and reliable His words are.  So, it is our prayer that we are doers of the word and not hearers only.
