Then little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” And He laid His hands on them and departed from there (Matthew 19:13-15).

Some adults have the notion that children are too young to understand the gospel message or do not have the ability to develop a relationship with God. The disciples of Jesus felt the same way too – and they rebuked the children and the parents who brought them for prayers.

However, Jesus did not approve of the disciples turning away the children in Matthew 19:14. It is the will of God that little children would come to Him and experience His touch. Our Father’s will should be our will if we are truly His children. Thus, we should seek to fulfil the Father’s will as He enables us. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).

Explaining the gospel message to children is an invitation for children to get to know God. Through the gospel message, they are able to understand what Jesus did for them and us all, on the cross of Calvary. Let us be careful that we do not underestimate their ability to understand the gospel message. We do not need to complicate our explanation of what the gospel is. It can be presented using simple methods.

Before we introduce the Lead a Child to Jesus booklet, let us briefly make some notes.

  1. When we explain the gospel message to a child, let us remember that we are engaging the inner spirit of the child. This is because the gospel message is spiritual and can only be spiritually discerned.  But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14).
  1. The first point brings us to the place and power of prayer in converting the soul of a child. The role of prayer cannot be overemphasized. It is through prayer, the words we speak will penetrate and settle in the hearts and minds of the children we are reaching out to. Do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (Ephesians 1:16-19).

Through prayer, the children can understand the message of salvation as the Holy Spirit works in their hearts. Through prayer, the children become aware of their sinful nature, and can then respond to the love, forgiveness and grace Jesus offers.

  1. Consistency in practice of the word  is another important aspect of reaching out to children. This is especially true for parents who interact with their children on a daily basis. The children are more likely to understand the gospel message when they “see” the message in the parents.  But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does (James 1:22-25). When our actions don’t match our words, then, we risk confusing the child or worse, pushing them away from the gospel as they witness our hypocrisy.
  1. Another important aspect is consistency in teaching them the word of God and explaining the gospel message until they understand. The point at which a child will understand the gospel message will definitely vary from one child to another. Hence, we should use all means available to communicate this message until it accomplishes its purpose. We should also be careful to use age-appropriate language and illustrations to aid their understanding. As they grow older and mature in understanding, we can then fill in the parts we might have left out. Again, we do not need to complicate our explanation of the gospel message.  Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, like the days of the heavens above the earth (Deuteronomy 11:18-21).
  1. It is God’s will and desire for children to be saved. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). … He seeks godly offspring… (Malachi 2:15).
  1. Finally, a godly heritage is the only, lasting heritage we can give our children. When we lead a child to know Jesus and experience His saving grace, we have given them the most important gift, for now and throughout eternity! How wonderful to perpetuate a godly generation like Lois, Eunice and then, Timothy. When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also (2 Timothy 1:5).

God is counting on us to instruct the children He has put on our paths about the ways of the Lord. Our Father will be pleased as we continue the work that His Son, Jesus, started while physically on earth.
