Let’s look at some lessons we can learn from those verses.

Some lessons from the story of Creation

God made the world.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).  The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters (Psalm 24:1-2).

God made the world. God made the plants and animals. An emphasis on God as the creator of the world is encouraged, especially with numerous misleading information and denial of God as the Creator in our world today.

The word of God is powerful.

Then God said… (Genesis 1: 6,9,11,14,20,24,26,29). The phrase “Then God said” is referenced severally in Genesis chapter 1. It is undeniable evidence for how God created the world – through His words. God spoke, and the earth brought forth grass, herbs, fruit trees, living creatures in the sea, birds, cattle etc.

He spoke creation, out of nothing, through His words, into existence. The word of God is powerful!

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth (Psalm 33:6). By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God… (Hebrews 11:3).

God made humans as either males or females.

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27).

The word of God has the answers to life’s questions. The word of God has not, and will never change, no matter how civilised society becomes. In the beginning, from Genesis, God made man male and female – this is how He has planned for us to identify as His creation. Again, this should be emphasized to the kids, so they understand God’s original plan.

God takes very good care of His creation.

God already provided for our needs even before we were created. Today, God still provides and cares for us. God’s care, concern, and provision for us are borne out of His great love for us. God loves every one of us.

And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food (Genesis 1:29).

God is good and His creation is good

Several times in Genesis 1, we see the reference …And God saw that it was good (Genesis 1:10). Then in Genesis 1:31, …God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.

Everything God made is good, indeed, very good. This demonstrates our Father’s love and care for us. He made a good earth for us to live in, good plants and animals for us to use as food and also care for, good things for us to enjoy every day. God is good!

Interactive flash cards

While these flashcards provide a visual representation of the plants and animals in the bible, as well as, where they are found in the bible, they can be used in a more interactive way. The easiest way to achieve this is to:

  1. Read the reference. Ask the kids to read the flash card out loud (if they can). During your preparation, you might want to add some verses before or after the given reference to provide context.
  2. Discuss the reference. Ideally, you will want to explain the reference in your own words. Tell the story behind the reference, or explain the circumstance around the reference.
  3. Ask questions, and then, guide the kids in arriving at the answers if necessary.

Some questions that can open up further discussions include:

  • What was this (the plant or animal) used for in the Bible?
  • What can we use this (the plant or the animal) for today?
  • How can we care for the plant or animal?
  • What can we learn from the Bible verse?
  1. Finally, be creative.
