An object lesson is a method of teaching where a teacher uses a physical object or visual aid to explain or discuss a lesson. Visual aids include images/pictures, videos, graphs, maps, poster board, etc.
Jesus is our greatest Teacher and when He was physically on earth, He used objects, plants, and animal characters to explain several of His teachings. Some of the writers of the bible also used objects to explain what they were trying to tell us.
Consider the following:
- In the parable of the Sower, Jesus used seed, thorns, rock, a wayside, and a good soil (see Luke 8: 4-8, 11-15) to explain how the heart of a man responds to the word of God
- In the parable of the wheat and tares (see Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43), Jesus used wheat, tares, and barn to compare true and false believers and reveal God’s plans at the end of time.
- In Luke 13:20,21, the leaven/yeast in the parable tells us how the kingdom of God expands its reach in our hearts and in our world by the grace of God.
- Other examples include door (John 10:9); vine and branches (John 15:5); clay (Jeremiah 18:6); scarlet and wool (Isaiah 1:18); goat and sheep (Matthew 25:31-46) and many more.
