Ruth, a Moabitess, leaves the known for the unknown. She chooses to let go of her idols to worship the God of Israel. She chooses to leave her family and friends to live with the people of Israel. There was no reward in sight for her. Even Naomi, her mother-in-law discouraged her from following her back to Bethlehem. Naomi explained that she could not give her any husband. Ruth did not seem to care about having a husband – all she wanted was to be with Naomi, the people of Israel and to serve the God of Israel.

But God had better plans for her – much better than she could have thought or imagined!

This is how God works in the lives of those who love Him and are committed to Him.

The story of Ruth and Naomi teaches us that:

  1. God is always working behind the scenes, making the good and bad events of our lives to work for our good and to the glory of God. Nothing happens to a believer by chance. God is sovereign and arranges events and people to fulfil the great plans He has for us. God is always watching over His word to fulfil it.
  2. When we feel we have no one to care for us, or all hope is lost, God will always raise a helper for us.
  3. God will reward love, labour, devotion, and commitment to Him. He will also reward our service and faithfulness in the family of God.
  4. God can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things for His glory.
  5. There is always hope in the midst of difficulties and challenges of life, especially when we put our trust in God.
  6. Good character is important, especially when no one is watching. Ruth was kind, respectful, hardworking, loving, and caring, even when no one was watching. The news of her character spread around the city and even Boaz took notice of it.
  7. Faith and salvation in Jesus is personal. Each one must personally decide to follow Jesus or not. Orpah and Ruth must have heard about the God of Israel from Naomi. When given the opportunity to stay in Moab and continue worshipping their idols or go to Bethlehem where they would have the opportunity to serve the God of Israel, Orpah chose to stay in Moab, while Ruth followed Naomi to Bethlehem.
  8. Lastly, God has promised to send a redeemer who would pay the price for the sins of the world. Boaz was a “type” of Jesus as he played the role of redeemer to Ruth and Naomi.God fulfilled His promise in sending Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. He paid the price. He bought us back to God with His own blood.
