What are some benefits of using devotionals?

Devotionals are very useful in providing daily reading suggestions from the bible. They are good at helping us become consistent in nurturing our spiritual life through regular bible reading, prayer, meditation; and even sharing the gospel with friends, families or whoever God brings our way. When we read God’s words daily, we are encouraged, renewed, and empowered to face the challenges each day brings.

Also, devotionals provide a means of building a steady, fruitful, and meaningful relationship with God. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalms 119:105).

While devotionals come in different formats, they are not limited to being used by adults. Devotional for kids can be used to encourage and nurture the spiritual lives of kids through regular reading of God’s words, praying, meditating, and sharing.

A few things to note about devotional for kids

First, let us explain a few things below:

1. Our kids are not too young to have a daily devotional life

2. They can understand the word of God just like the adults. Of course, we have to utilize age-appropriate language and materials.

3. We can effectively create time to help our kids with their devotional life if we desire it so much. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness…” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

4. We don’t have to be rigid about timing or place though it will be helpful to develop a pattern, so our kids know what to expect at such times.

5. If you have tried to develop a devotional life with your kids but didn’t seem to do so well, now is the time to try again. Don’t give up. You can do this by God’s grace.

Some practical tips when using devotional for kids

Here are some practical tips to remember when using these resources.

  1. Make sure you download and print your devotional calendar and the devotional flashcards ahead of each month, so you don’t miss out on any day. Please note that these devotional calendars are perpetual in nature, which means there are no years or days on the calendar. You can use them repeatedly for years to come.
  2. Make sure you put the devotional calendar and devotional flashcards where you can see them. Make them visible for you and your kids to see. This way, you will not forget to use them.
  3. Most times, we just have to get into the daily habit of praying and reading the bible with our kids and then, it becomes a regular activity for us. So, let’s be consistent in forming this life-changing habit.
  4. Find a quiet place with no or minimal distractions for you and your child to read the bible verses, discuss together and pray over the lessons. The devotional calendar works well indoors, and the devotional flashcards can be used outdoors or on-the-go. Find what works for you.
  5. If you have an older kid who can read and might be able to handle the devotional by themselves, then, teach and encourage them to use the devotionals by themselves. But always ask them to share what they read and learnt from the bible verses. Remind them before going to bed or when they wake up to observe their devotional time.
  6. Always ask God for His grace to be intentional and consistent. Doing devotionals with our kids is part of our “training up a child in the way he should go”, part of our God-given calling and assignment as stewards or guardians over our children. If we struggle, we know God is very much willing to help us, so, let’s ask Him.
