Tiny hands and babbles

Janet and Yoda were having their monthly meet-up in Yoda’s house and had brought their children with them so they could play together.

The mothers were happily chatting about their next road trip while the children were also chatting, playing, and stacking bricks and blocks.

Just then Yoda’s daughter, Tracy, raised her hands into the air and started babbling something familiar.

“Is Tracy reciting a verse from the Bible?”, Janet asked, surprised at 20-month-old Tracy.

“Yes, you heard her right. She said, “bless the Lord O my soul, and everything within me, bless His holy name”, Yoda replied, reciting the verse for her friend.

“Wow, I’m really surprised. Have you started teaching her to memorise the bible like you are doing with her elder brother, Jake?”, Janet asked.

“No, not yet. But every time I teach Jake, Tracy listens too, and she keeps repeating whatever we are saying. That verse from Psalms 103:1 is what we have been memorising since last week”, Yoda explained.

“You are doing really well with them. I wish I could teach my kids to memorise the bible too. I’m just too busy with work. I am always tired after each day’s work”, Janet lamented.

“You have to make out time Janet. If it is really important to you, you have to make out time”, Yoda said.

We understand from Malachi 2:15 that God seeks godly children from the family unit. In Deuteronomy 11:19, we have clear instructions to teach our children about God’s ways and wonders – “you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up”.

Timothy knew the Scriptures from his childhood. And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15). He was taught by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.

When we help our children to learn and love the word of God, we lay a solid foundation that will help them to quickly discover for themselves who God is, and in turn enable them to build a beautiful relationship with Him. Let us rise to the responsibility to “train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).
