In series 1 of the Easter story, we summarized the significance of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the cross. In this series, we focus on the significance of the resurrection of Jesus from the grave.

The resurrection event cannot be overemphasized in the history of Christianity. Over the years, people have questioned and doubted the resurrection of Jesus. And some who are convinced about the resurrection, choose not to speak of it as the truth. Rather, they prefer to please the crowd of unbelievers – just like the guards who witnessed the angel roll away the stone but chose to suppress the truth.

And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men (Matthew 28:2-4).

The guards knew something great was happening. Rather than speak and even proclaim the truth, they chose to keep quiet in exchange for a large sum of money.

Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, “Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.’ And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease him and make you secure.” So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day (Matthew 28:11-15).

Fortunately, the truth of God’s word cannot be silenced. Jesus appeared to many other people who gladly proclaimed that He is risen!

The resurrection of Jesus gives credibility to our Christian faith. As Paul convincingly wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:12-19, “If Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty, and your faith is also empty”.

Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty, and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise upif in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable (1 Corinthians 15:12-19).

As Christians today, we have the wonderful responsibility to keep proclaiming the risen Lord – even to our kids. That’s why we have written this Bible Story Teaching pack – to help kids understand and believe the resurrection event.

This Bible story teaching pack is titled “Jesus is alive!: The true Easter story – series 2”. It summarizes the events that led to the resurrection of Jesus and the significance of the resurrection of Jesus. These events include the burial of Jesus by Joseph of Arimathea; the placing of a guard at the tomb by the chief priests and Pharisees; the appearance of an angel who rolled away the stone at the tomb; the appearance of Jesus to Mary Magdalene, some women, his disciples, and so on. The story also emphasizes the importance and necessity of the resurrection of Jesus. This is not just a story – if Jesus did not rise from the grave, our faith is in vain and has no foundation.

The bible references for the story are as follows: Matthew 27:57 – 28:10; Luke 24:13-15,36-53.
